Powering a 450 MW hydro electric power station

DEVONPORT, TASMANIA - For our customer Hydro Tasmania, Delta today completed the refurbishment of a large hydraulic cylinder that is used as the actuator to open and close the Gordon Dam intake gate, at the 450 MW Gordon Power Station.

The cylinder has an 18” bore, with 6” diameter rod, and a stroke of 241”.

Delta re-chromed the rod, honed the bore, replaced all the seals, machined new bronze bushes and re-assembled the cylinder.

The cylindrical intake gate that the cylinder opens and closes weighs 60 tonne, is 8 metres in diameter and 5 metres high. Watch the video below to see the critical importance of the hydraulic cylinder.
